Adduco CASE STUDY: Aligning Leadership Around a Strategy for Canadian Market Growth
The Challenge
The Canadian operation of a global engineering and consulting company had struggled to establish a strong presence in the Calgary energy market. Despite significant international experience and technical capability, its Canadian leadership faced a challenge common to many foreign-owned companies: translating global strengths into a strategy aligned with local customers, competition and market realities.
The Canadian President wanted his senior leadership team to help shape and take ownership of the strategy. He also needed a credible, professionally developed plan to help foreign ownership understand why succeeding in Western Canada required a different approach and appropriate local support.
Our Approach
Adduco began with discovery interviews with the President and executive leaders to understand their perspectives, challenges and aspirations. These insights shaped a facilitated strategy process tailored to the organization.
Adduco then facilitated a two-day senior leadership workshop that examined the external business environment, organizational strengths and challenges, and key strategic choices: winning aspiration, where to play, how to win, required capabilities and supporting management systems.
The process created space for leaders to step beyond immediate operational priorities, contribute their knowledge and develop a shared understanding of the business. Independent facilitation also allowed the President to participate and listen without being perceived as predetermining the outcome.
Adduco's combination of strategy facilitation and practical energy, engineering and business experience helped build credibility with the technical leadership team while keeping discussions grounded in commercial realities.
Strategic Focus
A key discussion was how far the Canadian business should diversify beyond its established energy capabilities. International expertise in areas such as hydrogen offered potential differentiation, but the Western Canadian market was not developing at the pace anticipated.
The process helped leadership balance longer-term opportunities with the capabilities and positioning needed to compete today. Recommendations focused on three priorities: strengthening brand awareness and market positioning, developing a more deliberate business-development and sales approach, and attracting and retaining technical talent.
The Result
The engagement created greater leadership alignment around the market, strategic priorities and actions required to move forward. Because leaders helped develop the strategy, the President also had stronger organizational endorsement when implementing change and engaging with foreign ownership.
Adduco consolidated the analysis, strategic choices and recommendations into a professional report that clearly articulated issues the President had struggled to communicate. It provided a foundation for more solutions-oriented discussions with foreign leadership and a practical strategic reference for the Canadian organization.
The result was more than a strategy workshop: it created shared ownership, an actionable strategic foundation, and a credible way to connect Canadian market realities with global corporate direction.
